Ich bin ein Berliner
Goodbye London, hello Berlin! This week I moved to Berlin, Germany, after 6 months of living in the UK. While London generally treated me well, it was a nightmare logistically and a frighteningly expensive city to live in. With money pouring into real estate from the world's millionaires and billionaires, and hedge fund investors cashing in their fortunes, London is officially now the world's most expensive city. Yes last winter was very mild, but this summer has been oppressively wet and awful - the sun hardly ever appeared! London is also WAY overcrowded and too obsessed with terrorism and security - they have CCTV cameras everywhere, even in public bathrooms! Hopefully things will change under Gordon Brown but it will probably take some time to undo the paranoia created by Blair and the big brother society. I'll miss my friends but was very happy to leave (ecstatic even). I took a bus from Victoria station and 16 hours later I was in Berlin, where I am now updating my blog.
The quick report from Deutschland: I love my new apartment, it's fabulous and CHEAP and I don't have any flatmates! Berlin is HAPPENING! I start German classes today and looking forward to being settled here for a long period. I have a great couch, come and visit!

Well, I am completely jealous! You made the jump that I'm wanting to make, but am a bit too scared to do! You moved to Berlin! And you don't speak German neither! Any advice on someone who might also make the big move from London to Berlin?

Oops, it appears my first comment didn't work!
Well, I was just expressing my jealousy that you've made the move that I am just to nervous to make!
So, have you got any advice for a Londoner making the move to Berlin?
Ahh, and you also don't speak German! Have you started picking it up well?

Hi Paul,
I was wondering what had happened to you and was glad (and a bit jealous truthfully) that you left NM for London and now Berlin.
Agree that London is over-rated. I went there Oct. 2002 and found it expensive and not very inspiring creatively. No wonder the Beatles and the Who and the Kinks etc. loved coming to the U.S. so much.
It also pissed me off that the English do not accept currency from Northern Ireland (I spent a week in Belfast and NI), yet the residents of NI pay taxes to the British government...oh but they do accept Scottish currency...go figure.
Hope all is well. I'll check your blog out once in a while.
